Decorative and functional, these modern match holders are making their way into stores and hearts across America this fall.
Millions of people around the world love using candles, incense, and oil warmers to bring warmth, beauty, and scents of pleasure to our homes, or enjoying smoking their favorite cigars and pipes. Many of these people are satisfied using lighters for this purpose. However, some of us just love using matches. They are timeless, natural, beautiful, mesmerizing. We love holding them, striking them, watching them burn, lighting our objects of pleasure, slowly blowing them out, and then savoring the smell of our burnt matches.
If you're among the match lovers of the world, you might be aware of match holders because they’ve existed for centuries. Even today you can buy them as antiques. However, I stumbled across them because I was looking for a cute container for my matches; I just can't stand keeping lighters and matchbooks next to my candles and incense holders. The only modern containers I found were for fireplaces. So, out of my frustration of not finding what I was looking for, the idea of making a modern match holder for everyday use was born.
*Snazzy video coming soon!
These modern match holders are being designed by myself and a professional potter, and not only are the containers themselves decorative, but so are the striking surfaces (or "strikers"). The strikers are paper-punched from sheets of phosphorus and come in different shapes, like a heart, angel, 5-pointed star, 6-pointed star, cross, the sun, Christmas tree. The goal of my project is to sell these match holders in stores by this coming holiday season, which will boost the sales of small businesses around the country, and promote peace, well-being and creativity. Our first design (pictured above), the glass "zen" match holder is already in 3 stores.
Where Your Money Goes
We need to import the matches and sheets of striking surface from companies overseas, and while the materials themselves are not that expensive, we need to order them in huge quantities and pay a lot for international shipping. Your money will provide the funding to order the matches and striking surfaces, buy more glass containers and clay to make new match holders, plus marketing and shipping expenses to meet the demand for holiday orders (many retailers have already expressed interest). You would also be supporting artists (me and my potter friend), plus the small business owners and their employees who will benefit from the sales of these match holders.
We'll be giving away free "Zen" match holders, plus the new ones we're designing.
Some very lucky backers will also receive signed prints of my representational "Flowers" paintings:
Some extremely lucky backers will received a signed original "Spirituality" painting:
